A dead water bug on the stairs leading out of the subway station. Carcass nose down as if he were diving into the concrete (cockroaches and waterbugs are always male to me. spiders female). A few blocks away, there is another dead waterbug sprawled on the sidewalk.

All the men in New York seem to be wearing light blue dress shirts today. Driving through mid-town I saw clouds/clusters of them--blue-shirted men--traveling in packs.

So humid today, I can feel myself displacing the thick thick air as I walk. All the colors are muted--shrouded in the heaviness, dulled by the white sky. I'm trying to take pictures for Christine but everything is so ugly.

Rainy day:

Car ride to work, slogging along the FDR drive alongside the East River Park-it's shrouded in fog. The residue of a birthday party lingers on the chain-link fence--a metallic happy birthday banner reduced to the word "birth".

Midtown (51st and Madison): an astonishing number of grown men wearing those translucent pull-over drugstore ponchos.
